On the road to Wichita & getting to here

We would like to share with you, our clients and perspective clients a little bit about who we are and how we got to this point, in this Vagabond Photography's first blog post. After this first post we will be discussing photo shoots (sessions) we would like to work on and new products that are out on the market which we use or would like to try out along with other topics in the photography business that are near and dear to our hearts. Also we will be sharing with you some of the outtakes and sneak peaks from recent sessions.

Let’s Begin

Greetings, my name is Tim Gumz, owner and photographer of Vagabond Photography. I started this company about 6-7 years ago in college as a small side project to make some extra money while attending UW-Whitewater. It was intended to be a sport and event photography company while attending university, but this quickly changed into a portrait and event photography company with-in the first couple of years.
In addition, while attending UW-Whitewater I was head staff photographer for the athletics departments for two years and head photo editor for University’s newspaper for one and a half years which allowed me to learn about how other larger entities work with photographers and what it takes to have a healthy working relationship with other photographers around you.
Since graduating for University I have worked for several news outlets as a freelance journalist, photographer and other photography companies as a sports, product and events photographer while keeping Vagabond Photography alive as a part time company.
In September of 2015 I decided it was time to make Vagabond Photography my main priority and make my dream come true of working full time for my own company. It has been an interesting journey, with its ups and downs these past few month and I learned there is a lot more to running a company than just taking photos and editing them for clients. With some help of other photographers and friends in the business and accounting industry I learned how to avoid some of the pit falls that newer companies face when deciding to go full time.
I'd like to leave you with a short story of my companies name because I get asked this question a fair amount. The name for my company came during a road trip I was on to cover water ski event in Wichita, Kansas in 2007 for a college friend who made it the Midwest Regional Tournament. He stated while on I-80 somewhere around Kansas City, that “I was like a gypsy every weekend traveling with him and other clients going to events and I should use it as a way to promote myself at events.” I thought about it for a while, while on the road and came to the conclusion that I was more of a vagabond and it defined me better at the time than a gypsy thus the name Vagabond Photography came about on the road to Wichita.
So here at Vagabond Photography I still try to keep with that tradition that was present at the inception of my company. We travel to you, to create a memory, that you will cherish and carry for a lifetime.
